She left in 1969 the Panthers and left high school, having previously gone to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She started performing in small groups all over the Chicago area first performing in Cash McCall's band Lyfe that included her boyfriend at the time, Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan along with Hassan got married in the year 1970.
